At a summer 2009 Tucson TAWL Board Meeting, the Board voted to phase out the bookstore over the fiscal year ending June 30, 2010 by selling off the inventory at this year’s events, through special sales, and of course, at the bookstore, which remained open as usual until the inventory was gone. We will still order books for conferences when our keynote speakers or other presenters have significant offerings. Some of the remaining inventory was donated to the University of Arizona College of Education for distribution to students in the Initial Teacher Preparation Program. The College thanked TAWL for its generous donation and reported that all the books had been claimed within two days.
We deeply regret that TAWL can no longer offer this service. The easy availability of books through Amazon, and changes in ordering practices at the University of Arizona, combined to make it difficult for us to make any profits selling books. It was costing TAWL more to maintain the bookstore than we were making selling books.
